National Treasurer (part-time)

The Theosophical Society in New Zealand Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes an underlying unity of all life and encourages enquiry with open hearts and minds into world religions, philosophy, science and the arts. The Society supports the individual’s endeavours to understand and apply the ageless wisdom and increase awareness of the inner reality inherent in every human being.

 

We are looking for someone to manage the accounts for the Society. The main tasks of the National Treasurer are:

  • Daily Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable work
  • Entries for ApprovalMax (or similar) authorisations
  • Data entry to Xero Accounting
  • Running Xero reports for monthly / periodic financials
  • Employee pays and PAYE
  • Managing the annual budget process
  • Managing End of Year accounts and working with the Auditor
  • General liaising with banks and other organisations as required

Skills and experience sought include:

  • Someone with an eye for detail
  • Use of Accounting software and Microsoft Office products such as Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Good team player with interpersonal skills
  • Has an affinity with our Society’s Objects and Mission

Specific Responsibilities

 

  1. Keep a record of all income and expenses of The Theosophical Society in New Zealand Inc. (TSNZ) using Xero accounting system.
  2. Guide and advise the Management Team in the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements within the relevant policy framework.
  3. Remit of the New Zealand National Section annual fees to the International Treasurer before March 1st of the current financial year.
  4. Be responsible for the direction of all matters delineated by the Inland Revenue and the Charities Services.
  5. Keep the National President and National Vice President informed about their financial duties and responsibilities.
  6. Advise the National President/National Vice President on the financial implications of the TSNZ strategic plans and key assumptions included in management's operational plan and budget.
  7. Confirm that the financial resources of TSNZ meet present and future needs.
  8. Understand the accounting procedures and key internal controls, so as to be able to assure the Governance Board the financial integrity of TSNZ.
  9. Ensure the accounts are properly audited, that accepted recommendations of the auditors are implemented, and meet the auditor at least once a year.
  10. Formally present the accounts at TSNZ AGM, drawing attention to important points.
  11. Monitor TSNZ investment activity and ensure its consistency with policies, aims, objectives, and legal responsibilities and to report to the National President.
  12. Liaison with other organisations in relation to Property e.g. leases, fire alarm test etc.
  13. To carry out implementation of policy where appropriate.
  1. The National Treasurer's Responsibilities:
    1. Paying each employee and volunteer in accordance with the approved terms and conditions, and issuing payslips.
    2. Operating the PAYE system, maintaining the required records and communication with IRD
    3. Ensuring that the correct deductions for Income Tax, ACC and Kiwisaver are paid to the appropriate body, and that the necessary returns are made.
    4. Administering statutory sick pay.
    5. Reimbursement of volunteer receipted expenses.
